Top Tips To Save Money When Shopping Online

Since starting my blog, I’ve shared some tips on how you can save money on makeup brush cleansers and Brazilian blow dry treatments. As you have probably guessed from these posts (as well as the name of this blog!) I love finding opportunities to save money; I try to get the best deal no matter where I shop or what it is I am purchasing.

I do the majority of my shopping online – rather than in stores – mainly due to the convenience factor. A growing number of online stores offer free delivery and free returns which is another bonus! But I also find that there are far more opportunities to save money when shopping online, thanks to voucher codes and other handy tips that I’m sharing with you in this post.

These six simple tips are easy enough for anyone to start implementing right away. Whether you are saving for a rainy day, a designer handbag or a deposit on a house, here are some of the things you can do when shopping online to make sure you’re closer to achieving your savings goal.

Use price comparison websites

Especially when it comes to utility bills, phone contracts, holidays and insurance. Make use of comparison websites to ensure you are getting the best deal for the same product or service. There is now an increasing number of sites, such as PriceRunner, which allow you to compare prices for almost any product. Sites such as these provide you with the most up to date price on any product and compares it against every major retailer. So next time you’re shopping for a high value item, such as a laptop, tv or camera, check you’re getting the best deal!

Look for substitutes

Have a browse online to find a cheaper alternative to what you’re looking for. This is definitely applicable when buying a beauty product. There are fantastic affordable brands out there (NYX springs to mind) which have great quality products that are a fantastic substitute for higher end brands. Another example is keeping up with the latest beauty tool trends – from silicone beauty blenders to dermarollers to spoon-shaped brushes. This can be very expensive so it’s great that more affordable options are available on Amazon and eBay at a fraction of the price.

Use voucher codes

This is something that not enough people make the most of! Before I purchase anything online I have a quick Google search to see if there are any voucher codes available that I can use. It only takes a minute and you may be surprised at how much you could save on your shopping basket (even if it’s just free shipping).

Sign up for price alerts

This is a brilliant tool that I wish I had known about earlier. The sites I am aware of that offer this service are Pricerunner and PriceSpy but there may be more. You simply search a product that you wish to purchase and sign up to email alerts for it. As soon as a retailer reduces the price of your product you receive an email straight away. If there’s something you want to buy and you can be patient enough to wait for the price to be lowered, then this is the tool for you!

Sign up to email newsletters

Quite a few fashion retailers are known to do this. By subscribing to their email newsletter, you could receive an offer, for example 15-20% off your first purchase (I have recently done this for H&M and Aldo). It’s that easy! You can always unsubscribe from the email newsletters once you have redeemed your offer.

Get rewarded

As if you need another reason to shop! There are now so many sites that offer cash back if you shop through their affiliate links. The percentage of the purchase you receive back varies between sites but I’ve seen up to 15% cash back! When purchasing a high value item it is definitely sensible to check what cash back you could receive. Also, many current accounts and credit cards are now offering cash back on certain retailers. So it’s worth checking what’s available to you before your next shopping spree.

And this concludes my first money post! I hope you’ll find these tips useful and I have many more money posts in the pipeline. If there is anything in particular you’d like me to write about then let me know in the comments below!

  • Great post! I actually do these so I’m happy to read that someone else does. I don’t like to pay shipping because it can get really expensive when shipping to other countries so it’s always smart to use voucher codes, etc. Thanks for sharing your great tips. x
