At Home Keratin Hair Treatment

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with curly, frizzy and generally unruly hair. Determined to find some sort of solution to this, I learnt about a Keratin Blow Dry treatment (otherwise known as a Brazilian Blow Dry).

The treatment essentially seals the hair strands with a layer of keratin (a protein that makes up a large proportion of the hair) to make it silky, smooth and straight. The process is quite long, which I will go on to explain in a little more detail, but the results last up to 3 months. The result is shinier, smoother hair that is significantly easier to manage and style. I no longer have to straighten my hair every single morning and I don’t have to worry about it getting frizzy as soon as I step outdoors.

So how accessible is the treatment? Well, getting it done at the salon can set you back anywhere between £100 – £250, dependent on your hair length and thickness. This is partly due to the lengthy application process which can take at least a few hours. Unwilling to spend this amount on a treatment that sounded too good to be true, I set out to find a more affordable alternative.

The Alternative At Home Treatment

After spending a few hours online, I discovered you can purchase a bottle of keratin treatment on eBay or Amazon for around £30. It is almost identical to the product that is used in salons, it delivers great results and is great value for money if you don’t mind sacrificing a few hours of your day to apply it yourself.

The Process

If you do decide that a keratin treatment is suitable for you and you wish to do it yourself then you need to have the following at hand:

  • Keratin treatment (available to purchase on eBay)
  • Clarifying shampoo
  • Application brush
  • Partitioning clips
  • Hair comb
  • Hair brush for blow drying
  • Hair dryer
  • Hair straighteners

The Method

Top Tip: Apply this treatment in a very well ventilated room. The product has a very strong smell and gets worse once it is heated!

The application process begins with the way you wash your hair. You need to use specifically clarifying shampoo which is normally provided when purchasing a keratin treatment kit online. Repeat this step once more if necessary. However, do not follow with conditioner!

Once the hair is washed it needs to be blow dried as straight as possible (which is where a good brush and hair clips come in handy). Once the hair is dry throughout, it needs to be partitioned into manageable sections. You can then start applying the keratin on the hair strands, working your way through each section. The consistency of the keratin treatment is almost gel like and using an application brush as pictured below will help to ensure every strand of hair has a good coating. You can use a comb to remove any excess product if you have applied too much. The treatment needs to be left in the hair for about 30 minutes before proceeding to the next stage of the process.

Next, you need to blow dry the hair away from the face to ensure the product doesn’t get in your eyes. This may take a while but continue until the keratin coated hair is fully dry. Finally, to seal the keratin in the hair you need to straighten it multiple times on the highest heat. Following this, you must wait 3 days before washing your hair again. During these 3 days, you should not get your hair wet or tie it up or even put clips in it (as this will create kinks). Only after the 3 days will the process be complete and you can wash your hair using salt free shampoo and conditioner.

The Result

And here are the results! In the first photo is my natural hair after I have blow dried it straight. The second photo is take just after I have applied the keratin to my hair, whilst the third shows the results once I have straightened my hair to seal in the keratin. I can see a noticeable difference in my hair, it is a lot smoother, easier to style and manage. The results last approximately 3 months for me, before I repeat the looong process again. But for me its definitely worth it! If you do have a similar hair type to me and have been considering getting a Keratin treatment without paying a premium price then this may definitely be worth a try!
